Have you ever walked through a mall food court and stopped dead in your tracks from the amazing smell coming from Cinnabon? Yeah, us too. Our recipe is as close to a Cinnabon roll as we could get. It's sinfully rich, in fact, we couldn't finish a whole roll on our own!
Homemade cinnamon rolls may seem complicated, but anyone can do it. There are three sections to this recipe. One is the dough, the filling and the icing. Enjoy!
CINNAMON ROLLS
INGREDIENTS
Dough
- 1/4 oz or 1 package of dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 4 cups flour
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 3 tbsp cinnamon
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tbsp flour
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 6 oz or 3/4 cup cream cheese
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1/8 tsp salt
DOUGH
Dissolve the yeast in warm milk in mixing bowl and set aside. In a mixer combine sugar, butter, salt, eggs and flour. Pour the yeast/milk mixture into the mixter and use the dough hook to mix the dough. Once the dough is thoroughly incorporated, form it into a giant ball with your hands and set it into a large, greased bowl. This can be greased with just a non-stick spray. Cover the bowl with cling wrap and set in a warm place for at least an hour to rise. It should rise to twice its original size.
Roll the dough onto a floured surface to roughly a 12 inch by 16 inch sheet. Use a pizza slicer or knife to cut the edges of the dough straight. Preheat oven to 350.
FILLING
In a mixing bowl combine brown sugar, cinnamon, softened butter and flour with a fork until completely incorporated. Make sure all ingredients are mixed thoroughly and all clumps of brown sugar are broken down. Spread the filling mixture evenly onto the sheet of dough. Then roll from one of the shorter edges all the way to the end until you get a long roll. Slice off the edges of the roll on either side to get a clean edge to start your rolls.
Slice the dough into roughly 1 1/2 inch slices and placed on a greased baking pan. You can place them near each other in a smaller pan to make them bake into each other or separately in a large pan depending on your preference. Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until the dough is slighly browned.
ICING
While the rolls bake make the icing by mixing the butter, cinnamon, cream cheese, vanilla and salt in a sauce pan. Once the rolls are out of the oven, warm the sauce pan on low until the icing is warm and slightly runny. Then pour the icing all over the rolls until evenly coated. Allow to cool and dig in!
